When Rohan was promoted to a team leader at his company, he believed his strong performance and technical expertise would naturally make him a good leader. But within a few months, he sensed something was not quite right. Team meetings felt tense, deadlines were slipping and despite his best efforts, his team seemed disengaged.
As part of the company’s leadership development program, Rohan participated in a 360-degree feedback assessment. The results surprised him. While his managers appreciated his dedication, his team members felt he rarely listened to their ideas and often made decisions too quickly. Reading those comments was uncomfortable, even emotional. Yet it was also the moment Rohan realized that leadership required far more than competence it required awareness.
Assessment plays a powerful role in leadership development because it helps individuals see themselves from different perspectives. In many organizations, tools like 360-degree feedback, leadership style inventories and emotional intelligence assessments help leaders understand how their behaviour impacts others.
Rohan also participated in a leadership simulation exercise where he had to manage a fictional business crisis involving a difficult client and an overworked team. The simulation revealed how quickly he jumped to problem-solving without involving his team. Through feedback and reflection, he began to understand the importance of collaboration and trust.
Over the next few months Rohan consciously worked on listening more and inviting his team’s opinions before making decisions. Gradually, the atmosphere changed. Team members felt valued, ideas flowed more freely and productivity improved.
Leadership assessments are not about labelling someone as good or bad. Instead, they act as mirrors that help leaders recognize their strengths and their blind spots. When used thoughtfully, these tools encourage reflection, learning and growth.
In the end, leadership development is not just about acquiring new skills, it is about becoming more self-aware and more human in the way we lead others.
